Ukraine plans to build ten small modular reactors
Ukraine aims to construct ten small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2050, adding up to 3,000 MW of power capacity to the energy system
Petro Kotin, head of Energoatom, shared this during an interview on the Energo LIVE program.
"We recognize both the need and the capacity to implement small modular reactors, with a total output of up to 3,000 MW," he said, emphasizing that Ukraine will require ten such facilities.
Energoatom, the country's nuclear operator, already has agreements with major SMR developers, including Holtec International.
Kotin noted that numerous companies worldwide are working on SMR technologies, underscoring the progress in nuclear innovation.
However, he admitted uncertainty regarding the safety of SMR operations during a full-scale war. Still, according to developers, these reactors are smaller, safer, and capable of operating independently of large power grids.
- On June 24, former Ukrenergo chairman Volodymyr Kudrytskyi stressed the urgency of building distributed power generation facilities. "We need new generating capacities to ensure that, if Russian attacks resume, they can't focus on 10 or 15 major plants but must contend with numerous smaller ones. Decentralizing energy generation is critical, and it must start now — not after victory or after the war," Kudrytskyi said.
