Mortality rate in Ukraine in 2024 is three times higher than birth rate — Opendatabot
In the first half of 2024, 250,972 people died in Ukraine and 87,655 children were born, which is 9% less than in the same period last year
This is evidenced by the data of the Opendatabot service.
This year, the birth rate has decreased by one and a half times compared to the period before the full-scale invasion: 87,655 children were born, compared to 132,595 in 2021.
The largest number of births and deaths in Ukraine were recorded in the Dnipropetrovsk region and Kyiv.
In Kyiv, the highest number of newborns was registered, totaling 9,695 babies. This was followed by Lviv with 7,923, and Dnipro with 6,962. In contrast, frontline regions reported much lower figures: Kherson region had 221 births, Donetsk region had 702, and Luhansk region saw no registrations for six months.
Currently, there are three deaths for every newborn in Ukraine. Analysts view this ratio as a significant indicator of the ongoing demographic crisis.
"For comparison, in the pre-COVID period of 2018-2020, the ratio was two deaths per newborn. In the first six months of 2024, Ukraine recorded 250,972 deaths, which is 1.4 times fewer than the 349,041 deaths reported in the same period of 2021. However, it’s important to note that 2021 was a peak year for deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic," Opendatabot states.
The highest number of deaths in Ukraine was registered in the Dnipropetrovsk region with 26,374, followed by the Kharkiv region with 17,999, and Kyiv with 17,449. The lowest numbers were reported in the frontline Kherson region with 2,334, Donetsk region with 5,753, and Chernivtsi region with 5,422.
