"Prior to this - from the moment the organization was founded in 1989 - the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was affiliated to the Moscow regional center," the press service of the organization notes.
The World Organization of Nuclear Power Plant Operators was created after the Chernobyl accident. The main mission of the organization is to maximize the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants around the world.
"For us, this membership is important, first of all, because it provides an opportunity for mutual support, exchange of information and the use of positive experience of other nuclear power plants in the world," Valentyna Odynytsia, Deputy Head of the Department of International Cooperation and Information of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, commented on the event.
The World Association of Nuclear Operators has several regional centers: Atlanta (USA), Tokyo (Japan), Paris (France) and Moscow (Russia), and the main office is located in London (Great Britain). The principle of affiliation of members to regional centers is mostly geographical. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant geographically belonged to the region of operation of the Moscow Center, as well as the nuclear plants of Lithuania, Bulgaria, Armenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic and other countries.
After the start of the full-scale invasion, the Moscow Center of the World Association of Nuclear Operators did not issue a single statement condemning Russian nuclear terrorism on the territory of Ukraine. This became the final argument for turning to the headquarters of the World Association of Nuclear Operators in London and demanding the final severing of ties with the Moscow center and the transition to the Paris one.
It is also noted that the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant will continue to be a member of the World Association of Nuclear Operators, participate in expert exchanges, as well as share and adopt experience within the organization.
