Bulgaria ready to veto nuclear sanctions against Russia and wants war to end - President Radev
Sofia will veto sanctions on Russia’s nuclear energy sector "because they will directly impact the Bulgaria's nuclear energy", but wants the war against Ukraine to end
Euractiv reported the information citing Bulgarian President Rumen Radev.
"It is time, one year after the start of this bloody war, to move the focus mostly on measures to stop it, and for resuming all diplomatic efforts in search of a peaceful solution," he said.
The president went on saying that Bulgaria would continue to support the people of Ukraine "to the extent of our possibilities" to help them through the critical winter months. He argued that providing weapons to Ukraine equals “putting out fire with gasoline”.
When asked about a possible new wave of sanctions that could target Russia's civilian nuclear sector, he said Bulgaria "cannot accept sanctions against Russia.”
"Bulgaria cannot accept sanctions on the nuclear energy sector, because those would directly impact our nuclear energy. This is a no-go. We are considering all possible areas where [further sanctions] are possible. But where are interests are at stake, as in nuclear energy, we follow the issues very closely," the president stated.
