Biden shared his opinion on the matter with CNN.
“Let him go,” the president said as he departed the White House this morning and was asked by CNN what his message to Russia was.
This is the first time Biden has publicly commented on the issue since Russian authorities accused Gershkovich of espionage on Thursday.
Later, when asked by another reporter whether the US would expel Russian diplomats or journalists over Gershkovich's detention, Biden said: “That's not the plan right now.”
The FSB detained the Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich in Yekaterinburg, arresting him in a case of espionage. The American newspaper where he works called on the United States to expel the Russian ambassador.
