"Since the beginning of the invasion, Belgium has been supporting Ukraine and sending equipment nonstop. We are also training Ukrainian military personnel and treating them in the hospital in Neder-over-Heembeek. This Friday, at the government meeting, I am going to propose a new specific aid package to help meet the urgent Ukrainian need of air defense and anti-tank weaponry, as well as of ammunition," said Dedonder.
The new aid package will not include tanks since Belgium does not have German Leopard 2 tanks. Dedonder said that the country sold them ten years ago due to the expiration of their service life. They could be purchased for Ukraine, however, Belgian companies are currently charging an "unreasonable price" for them.
"These tanks were resold for the equivalent of €10,000 to €15,000 because they were no longer functioning. There is nothing stopping us from buying them back, but they are not in a working condition. We do not consider it reasonable to buy them back for such high prices. Currently there are Belgian companies that make an unreasonable margin. The resale price is 500,000 euros for the machinery stored in hangars without having undergone any restoration," the minister emphasized.
