Beijing pledges legal review of Chinese nationals captured in Ukraine
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian states the government intends to review and assess the actions of its citizens captured in Ukraine in accordance with national law
Ukrinform reported the information.
He commented on the Chinese POWs' appeal to the government to return to their homeland.
Lin stated that the Chinese government's position is very clear, noting that they had issued multiple warnings and urged Chinese citizens to stay as far away as possible from conflict zones, avoid involvement in armed conflicts in any form, and refrain from participating in military operations on any side.
He also emphasized that Chinese government departments are still checking information about Chinese captured in the war against Ukraine and clarifying all the circumstances surrounding this situation.
The foreign ministry spokesman assured that the behavior of individual Chinese citizens abroad would be reviewed in accordance with current legislation, and that the Chinese side would take necessary consular and other actions.
Lin Jian added that China's position on the war in Ukraine remains consistent and clear and is to promote peace talks "to end the conflict."
The diplomat concluded by calling on all relevant parties to understand China’s objective and fair position correctly and to refrain from political manipulation or using the situation involving Chinese citizens captured in Ukraine for self-promotion or publicity.
