Why Ukraine needs new negotiation strategy, former MP explains
Former MP Hanna Hopko says that President Zelenskyy has stated Ukraine is ready to invite the aggressor state to a second Peace Summit
However, Hopko mentioned that the president is not prepared to negotiate with statesmen or engage in dialogue with veterans, nationalists, or the democratic opposition.
She shared her opinion on Espreso TV.
"For Ukraine to stay at the top of the global news agenda, we need to be creative. However, there is still no dialogue within the country between the president and the democratic opposition, or between the president and civil society. The president has not met with representatives from think tanks, veterans, or others who influence public opinion and protect national interests," she said.
Ukraine doesn't need a second Peace Summit. What we need is a summit focused on Russia's surrender, Hopko added.
"It should be held before the third anniversary of the genocide since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. We need to tell Biden clearly: 'What will your legacy be? If you come to Ukraine, don’t just lift restrictions or offer us more F-16s. We need more ATACMS and better chances to reclaim Crimea.' It would send a powerful message if, by the end of his term, Biden visited Crimea instead of Kyiv and said: 'Russia invaded Crimea in 2014 when I was vice president, and I visited Ukraine often. By the end of my presidency, we managed to drive Russia out.' We don’t need a mere 'stop'; we need a 'pushback.' This is crucial for US leadership and credibility, especially with China trying to outmaneuver the West diplomatically and promote its own peacekeeping ideas as more appealing," she stated.
The best way to communicate with the Global South is by ensuring Ukraine's victory, according to the former MP.
"Everyone is involved with the Global South in some way. When they see the aggressor making gains on the battlefield due to a lack of weapons - especially since North Korea has supplied more ammunition to Russia than all the G7 countries have provided to Ukraine - they become disillusioned with Western civilization's ability to assist. Therefore, our position must be stable, and this requires an honest internal dialogue. Specifically, we need more than just a few managers; we need to restore the real powers of Parliament and establish a technocratic government that knows how to act. We also need the Commander-in-Chief and military leaders who understand the situation from the battlefield. We must stop the attacks on the Ukrainian Armed Forces that appear to undermine the army because someone is afraid of the army as an institution. Addressing these issues in this order will help us regain trust," Hopko concluded.
