He told reporters about this, the corresponding video was published by the Department of Defense in X.
Hegseth was asked whether the new White House administration would be open to sending U.S. troops to Ukraine to monitor arms shipments, among other things. The Pentagon chief said no.
“We are not sending U.S. troops to Ukraine,” he said.
"The European continent deserves to be free from any aggression, but it ought be those in the neighborhood investing the most in that individual and collective defense," Hegseth added.
- On January 22, President Zelenskyy said that at least 200,000 peacekeepers would be needed to secure Ukraine after the fighting stops.
- He later clarified that the U.S. military should be among the peacekeeping forces in Ukraine.
- On February 11, the NYT wrote that Europe does not have 200,000 peacekeepers to send to Ukraine. This is almost three times more than the entire British army.
