US support allows Ukraine to strike into Russian territory, disrupting Kharkiv offensive - media
The deteriorating conditions on the battlefield forced the United States to allow Ukraine to use artillery and missile systems provided by the West to strike at Russian territory, thereby helping to disrupt the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region
The Associated Press reported the information.
According to AP, the results of this decision were noticeable within a few days: Ukrainian forces pushed back Russian positions, bought time to fortify their defenses, and even launched small counteroffensives. Ukraine gained authorization for these strikes in late May, shortly after Russia initiated a new front in the region on May 10.
Though not a panacea, the move has greatly slowed Russia’s momentum, even allowing Ukrainian troops to make advances along the northeast border, including recently recapturing areas southwest of Vovchansk.
According to military sources, the army's highly mobile HIMARS missile systems were deployed within hours of receiving authorization and successfully destroyed the Russian air defense system equipped to launch deadly missiles.
"The HIMARS were active throughout the day. From the very first days, Ukrainian forces managed to destroy entire columns of troops along the border waiting for the order to enter Ukraine," reported an artillery commander in the Kharkiv region with the call sign Hefastus.
The article states that the dynamics of the front changed almost immediately, allowing Ukrainian troops to stabilize the situation in the Kharkiv region.
- The Pentagon said that Ukraine may use arms provided by the US to strike Russian troops firing at Ukrainian forces anywhere across Russia's border, not only on Russian territory near Ukraine's Kharkiv region.
