Ukraine to receive Abrams tanks from Australia within months - Defense Express
Australia’s decommissioned Abrams tanks are likely to undergo technical training and re-equipment before being transferred to Ukraine’s Armed Forces
Valerii Riabykh, a military expert and development director at the Defense Express media and consulting company, shared this on Espreso TV.
Australia is set to send nearly fifty Abrams tanks to Ukraine, but the process may take some time. Before the tanks can be deployed, Ukrainian crews will need to be trained.
"Operating Abrams tanks is different from using post-Soviet models. We also need to set up a maintenance system, though some work has already begun. A system is in place to keep the tanks used by the 47th Brigade running, with help from American contractors," Riabykh said.
He added that the tanks are expected to be transferred in the coming months to equip additional tank battalions.
"This will greatly improve the capabilities of Ukraine's mechanized units for both defense and offensive operations. We hope that by early next year, these tanks will be fully integrated into the Ukrainian Armed Forces," he concluded.
- On September 25, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the arrival of the first batch of American-made Abrams tanks from the U.S. to Ukraine.
