Ukraine may receive 8 divisions of Russian S-400 from Turkey: expert explains how US can influence Erdogan
Former Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Oleh Rybachuk believes that the US is trying to negotiate with Turkey to transfer Russian S-400 air defense systems to Ukraine in exchange for the delivery of F-35 fighter jets
He said this on the Espreso TV channel.
"Erdogan has probably secured his last presidency. I don't think he even considers that he will be able to serve another term. It was the most difficult race for him. He is politically calm, so he can take risks. And what can Putin offer him? I don't know," Rybachuk explained.
According to Rybachuk, the US is trying to convince Turkey to transfer S-400 air defense systems to Ukraine.
"However, I know what the United States can offer him. America is offering him to sign contracts for the supply of F-35s, which the Americans have now sold to Turkey's NATO partners, the Greeks. And in return, the Americans expect that those S-400s, I think 8 divisions, which Erdogan bought from Russia and which turned out to be far from a miracle weapon, can end up in some third country, and then in Ukraine," he added.
- On January 27, Joe Biden's administration approved the sale of 40 new F-16 fighter jets to Turkey after Sweden ratified its NATO membership. The deal is worth $23 billion.
- On February 1, the United States officially confirmed that it is ready to resume Turkey's F-35 program if it gives up Russian S-300 and S-400 air defense systems.
