UK announces new aid to Ukraine, paid for with proceeds from frozen Russian assets
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, marking the first time it will be funded using interest from frozen Russian assets
The Guardian reported the information.
The £70 million aid package includes 350 British-manufactured air defense missiles, which have been rapidly adapted for ground launch.
Notably, this marks the first time the UK has used funds from frozen Russian assets to supply weapons to Ukraine.
The missiles will be deployed with Raven air defense systems. Ukraine’s inventory of Ravens will rise to 13, with five additional systems being provided by the UK.
“Russia, not Ukraine, should pay the price for Putin’s barbaric and illegal war. It is only right we use seized Russian assets to strengthen Ukraine’s air defences. The security of Ukraine is vital to our own,” said UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The UK’s updated national security strategy underscores the need to prepare for the possibility of a direct attack on its territory.
