Norwegian ministers arrive in Kyiv to discuss post-war support for Ukraine
On the morning of Wednesday, March 26, Norwegian Foreign Affairs Minister Espen Barth Eide and Minister of Labor and Social Inclusion Tonje Brenna arrived in the capital of Ukraine for a visit
The Norwegian government announced this on its website.
Norwegian officials are expected to meet with Ukrainian counterparts in Kyiv and discuss the results of Norway’s support for Ukraine.
"We arrived in Kyiv at a very important time for Ukraine. The war is progressing intensively, both sides are positioning themselves for negotiations that could pave the way for peace talks," said Espen Barth Eide.
He emphasized that plans for the post-war period should begin now.
"Norwegian support should be long-term, and I think it’s important to plan how we will continue supporting Ukraine. I hope that one day, this will be something other than massive amounts of ammunition," added the Norwegian Foreign Minister.
For the Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion, this is her first visit to Ukraine, focused on discussing preparations for when Ukrainians with temporary protection in Norway can return home.
"During meetings with Ukrainian authorities, we will be able to promise Norway’s long-term commitment. Ukrainians notice this. Right now, much attention is on the battles, but we must also ensure that society continues to function—that people have electricity, jobs, a functioning government, and active civil society, which is also part of the fight," said Minister Brenna.
The Norwegian government noted that on March 6, aid to Kyiv was increased by 50 billion NOK (about $4.8 billion), bringing the total to 217 million NOK by 2023 (over $20 billion).
- On March 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Støre in Oslo to discuss the frontline situation and security guarantees.
