Germany to send new IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine — ambassador
Germany has already delivered nine IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine. Additional systems are expected to be supplied in the near future
Germany's Ambassador to Ukraine Heiko Thoms stated this in an interview with Suspilne.
"We have actually already delivered nine IRIS-T systems, as far as I know, and more new IRIS-T systems are expected to be supplied in the near future," Thoms noted.
He added that providing air defense is "critically important" and Germany is currently Ukraine's largest partner in supplying air defense systems, although he understands that this assistance is still not enough.
Thoms also recalled that at the end of 2025, Germany transferred two additional Patriot systems to Ukraine and continues to supply ammunition for air defense systems.
"I know that this is still not enough. As I said, I also live here and understand what the situation is like, I know the realities. But we are doing everything we can and making every effort to support Ukraine – both through direct assistance to the energy sector and through providing air defense capabilities," Thoms concluded.
Previously, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Berlin has now transferred over a third of its Patriot systems to Ukraine and cannot provide more, as it is waiting for replacement deliveries.
