Drones become top priority for Ukraine aid following F-16 transfer — Dutch Defense Minister
Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans says that after the transfer of all 24 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine is completed, drones have become the new priority for military support
He said this in an interview with Ukrinform.
The Dutch Defense Minister noted that the priorities for military assistance to Ukraine have changed over time: initially, it was helmets and Stinger missiles, later – Patriot systems and their components, and eventually, F-16 fighter jets became the priority.
“We have delivered all 24 fighter jets, but we also continue to supply ammunition, spare parts, and conduct training,” said the head of the defense department.
According to him, the main focus is now on supplying drones: “Currently, our new priority is drones, mostly more complex ones. That is, not simple FPV drones, but more advanced ones.”
The minister also noted that the Netherlands continues to supply Ukraine with air defense systems, armored vehicles, various types of ammunition, fuel, and other necessary equipment.
“In total, we provide assistance amounting to about 3–3.5 billion euros per year. And we have said that we will maintain this level of support in 2026. So we have already pledged this money,” he clarified.
Due to Ukraine’s increased needs in wartime conditions, the Netherlands has already used 2 billion out of this year’s 3.5 billion euros, meaning the pace of assistance has accelerated.
“Currently, our priorities are drones. This includes air defense, everything related to the F-16s, as well as maritime security,” the minister summarized.
On May 26, the Dutch Defense Ministry confirmed the dispatch of the last batch of 24 F-16 fighter jets intended for Ukraine.
