Coalition of the Willing outlines four key objectives for Ukraine at Brussels meeting
On Thursday, April 10, a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing states began in Brussels. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov has also arrived. At the meeting, four objectives were outlined for the Security Assurance Forces in Ukraine
This was reported by journalist Tetiana Vysotska from the Espreso channel.
The Coalition of the Willing consists of 30 countries committed to establishing a long-lasting, just peace in Ukraine by providing security guarantees, including the possible deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine.
On April 10, defense ministers from the Coalition participants will take part in the meeting.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated that the Coalition has four goals to ensure Ukraine’s security: a safe sky, a safe sea, peace on land, and a strong Ukrainian army, according to European Pravda.
“Our plans are well-developed, and we have clear objectives for Ukraine. First, to ensure a safe sky. Second, to ensure a safe sea. Third, to support peace on land. And fourth, to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces so that they become the strongest deterrent,” he said.
He also explained that a future military mission of the Coalition, called the Security Assurance Forces, will work towards achieving these goals. The format of the mission has not yet been finalized.
“Our Security Assurance Forces for Ukraine will be a decisive and reliable element of the security system, ensuring that any peace established through negotiations will truly deliver what President Trump promised — lasting peace for Ukraine,” Healey emphasized.
Umerov emphasized that this meeting is a continuation of Kyiv’s dialogue with its partners following the summit of leaders at the level of the President of Ukraine in Paris and the recent meeting of the Chiefs of Staff of Ukraine, France, and the United Kingdom.
“The Coalition of the Willing is a new format of long-term support for Ukraine and security in Europe, uniting countries that are ready to work together for sustainable and lasting peace. It is also a strategic step toward modernizing the security architecture in Europe, which will be an adequate response to the constant threat from Russia,” noted the Defense Minister.
He added that on April 11 there will be a meeting in the Ramstein format, where one of the main issues to be discussed will be strengthening Ukraine’s air defense.
“We are also continuing discussions on industrial cooperation and the opening of joint defense productions, which will allow Ukraine to strengthen its own manufacturing base and ensure continuous support for the front,” Umerov wrote.
What is the Coalition of the Willing
The Coalition of the Willing is a group of countries that pledge support to Ukraine in its war with Russia and assist in establishing peace in Ukraine. They have mostly announced their willingness to provide peacekeeping forces or, at the very least, have considered it. The creation of such a coalition was announced by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer following a summit of 18 world leaders in London on March 2, 2025.
The initiative aims to strengthen European support for Ukraine amidst the instability of US policy and to create the foundations for a robust peace settlement to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. It is led by the United Kingdom and France, and includes other EU countries, as well as nations that are not members of NATO or the EU. There is no clear list of coalition members, but the following countries are preliminarily considered to be part of it: France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Baltic states (Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia), the Netherlands, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Spain, Denmark, Romania, Norway, Finland, Turkey, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and others.
On March 27, a summit of the Coalition of the Willing was held in Paris, organized by French President Emmanuel Macron.
