80% of Americans support Russia's energy embargo despite soaring gasoline prices
Most Americans support a ban on the purchase of Russian oil and other energy products in Russia, despite the sharp rise in gasoline prices
These are the results of a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted on Monday-Tuesday, Espresso.TV reports.
The poll showed US President Joe Biden, a Democrat, has broad support from his party and Republican voters to ban Russian oil and natural gas imports.
About 80% of respondents in the poll, including a hardline bipartisan majority, said Americans should not buy oil or gas from Russia during a conflict, even if it pushes up gasoline prices. The overall level of support remained unchanged from last week's survey, even as the average price at US gas stations surged to a record high of around $4.17 a gallon on Tuesday.
Also, the majority of respondents in the survey, 73%, said they would support the move by the United States and its allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine to try to shield Ukrainians from Russian air attacks.
At the same time, the majority of those polled said that they oppose the idea of airstrikes by the United States or the sending of American soldiers to Ukraine. In recent weeks, Biden's authorities with the crisis have received a better assessment, with 45% approved by the public in the latest poll versus 34% in a poll conducted on the eve of the February 24 Russian invasion.
The survey was conducted online and in English throughout the United States. 1005 respondents took part in the survey, the error is 4%.
